The Trouble I See follows Joey and Rashaan, two men who have cycled in and out of incarceration since early adulthood, as they are selected to take part in a rare father-daughter dance inside Richmond City Jail. Filmed over five years, the documentary asks how families survive when separation is constant. Using the annual dance as its emotional anchor, the film reveals the realities of growing up amid violence, generational incarceration, and a version of the American dream that often feels out of reach. At its core, The Trouble I See is about family — resilience shaped by humor, charisma, and an enduring love that persists despite the system working against it.
